Rangers request we leave the Parking Lot for museum visitors and park on the road
there is plenty of on-street parking in the surrounding areas, but car-pooling is a good idea.

This is also a fun place to bring friends who may not be that interested in Orienteering. There are three museums on the property: the 1872 Stow House, a historic house museum, the Sexton Museum which includes displays on a number of early local activities, and the South Coast Train Museum.

Schabarum Regional Park

The park, near the City of Industry, offers a combination of landscaped rolling hills in the North and unimproved hilly terrain that enables some great running along with areas of fight to the south. All efforts to keep the course out of the areas containing poison oak will be followed but long pants and sleeves would be important. From the 60 Freeway exit Azusa and head South 1/2 mile to Colima road and turn left, the park is immediately on your right. Vehicle fee for entering the park.

Tahquitz, San Bernardino Mountains.

  • There are four USFS campgrounds in the vicinity (Barton Flats, San Gorgonio, South Fork, and Heart Bar).
  • Barton Flats and San Gorgonio are equipped with showers. A few campsites can be reserved (1-800-280-CAMP), but most are left open on a first-come basis.
  • dispersed camping is allowed nearby on the eastern end , southern side of Jenks Lake Rd

From the I-10 in Redlands, take Highway 38 east into the mountains. Easiest exit from LA is Alabama exit (this is just west of the 10/210 junction) go north 2 blocks to LUGONIO which becomes Hwy 38, go east all the way. A supermarket is in the first half-mile, about the last chance for supplies. The entrance to the Tahquitz Boy Scout Camp is located about five and a half miles past Angelus Oaks (if you get to the Barton Flats Visitor Center, you've gone about a half-mile too far). Allow about 45 minutes of mountain driving from the freeway. You will see two entrances to the camp as you travel east on Highway 38 - the first is to the left, the second is to the right. Turn right (into the second entrance) and follow the signs.

Park-n-Ride might be a good idea. Closest is on the north side of the freeway in Yucaipa. Allow 30 minutes driving time from the Yucaipa Park and Ride to Tahquitz.

Topanga Canyon State Park

Trippet ranch, Topanga State Park, is in the Santa Monica mountains. To get there from the 101 in Woodland Hills, go south on Topanga Canyon Blvd about 8 miles. From PCH go north on Topanga Canyon to just past Old Topanga Canyon Rd. Either way, watch for a "Topanga State Park" sign and turn east onto Entrada. This is a dangerous corner) Go about a mile, bearing left at the fork. Registration will be at the end of the parking lot in the shaded picnic area. Expect warm, not hot, sunny day with a cooling afternoon breeze.
There is a $10 (2009) parking fee inside the park so you may want to car pool. Some free roadside or turnout parking spaces from 1/2 to 2km from the entrance exist. From there you can walk or hitch a ride with other orienteers. Come early.
The terrain is very diverse. Lots of open land with oak forest, slow to runable. Typical of the Santa Monicas, dense chaparral covers much of the area, but you will be able to avoid the fight unless you choose to travel through it. . Deep river gullys slice through the old ranch. If you haven't been to a meet here in a few years, you will be delighted by the 5 color o-cad map.

Hazards you need to be aware of:
  • 1. Poison oak is present and in some places abundant. Long pants and sleeves are advised. Wash off when you have finished! White and yellow should be able to easily avoid it.
  • 2. Rattle snakes live throughout the mountain range.
  • 3. Ticks are abundant! Wear light colors and long pants and sleeves.
  • 4. The open land is covered with tall grasses and foxtails. Gaiters and (lets hear it once more) long pants are advised. Duct tape covering the shoes and ankle is also a good idea.

Vasquez Rocks

Spectacular Sandstone peaks jut from the desert floor
Vasquez Rocks County Park, off the Antelope Valley Freeway, 45 minutes drive N of Los Angeles.
10700 W. Escondido Canyon Rd.       Agua Dulce, CA 91350
      (661) 268-0840

Come see where The Flintstones was filmed.

The terrain is very different from any other area that LAOC uses. You will find wide open areas with scrub brush. This is complimented with sheer rock structures and boulder piles, offering some complicated navigation on the advanced courses. Photos by Joel Thomson

DIRECTIONS: Take the Interstate 5 north through LA to the north end of the San Fernando Valley. Most LA freeways converge onto the I-5 at this point (210, 405, 170, 118) . Just a few miles north of the convergence, head East on Highway 14 (the Antelope fwy) and drive about fifteen miles, then exit at Agua Dulce Road.

Go north a couple of miles. Follow the road as it turns right, continue past a stop sign* for 1/4 mile. Park entrance is on the right. Continue through park on the dirt road to the large parking area. Parking is FREE ( 2007 ) *turn at the stop sign for stores and restaurants)

Possible Ride-share points:
1. Roxford exit from Golden St Fwy (I–5). Sylmar: freeways (210, 405, 170, 118) converge at the north end of the San Fernando valley. There is a Denny's, and some street parking on Encinitas Av.
2. Park&Ride. The first exit off the Antelope Valley Freeway (14) is San Fernando Road. There is ride-share parking at the bottom of the offramp. The offramp splits, bear to the right.

Air Travelers: The closest major airport is Burbank. Palmdale is as close in the other direction, do consider it if you can get a flight**; LAX and Ontario are viable alternatives and a small private airport is at Agua Dulce. **The local newspaper had an article yesterday about the efforts to ease traffic at LAX by promoting Palmdale as an alternative, so there may be some good cheap tickets, but then again, BURBANK is closest to some non-O destinations you may want to try - Universal Studios, Hollywood Sign etc

FACILITIES: there is only one drinking fountain, no other water. There are very few picnic tables. There is ample space for hikes and picnics elsewhere in the park. PLEASE TOTE YOUR TRASH. Propane stoves may be used MOST of the year, but only in the parking areas.  BBQ and other open fires probably allowed if its raining!
Coffee shop and restaurants are just 1/2 mile north of the Stop Sign you passed on the way in. "Bullwinkles" is there too. It is a famous country store with excellent gifts too.

CAMPING:

Group camping:  the group camp site at  Vasquez is available to not-for-profit groups with a $2 million insurance bond. (useful for scouts)

Individuals: There are two campgrounds not too far from Vasquez, both on Angeles Ntl. Forest land, and both are open all year.
The closer one is at Soledad, the other one is called Live Oak.  They are at 2,000 feet elevation, and have 6 and 7 sites for tents or smaller RVs, respectively.  Both have picnic tables, fire rings, drinking water, and vault toilets.
The fee is $10 per night at both places and phone number of the Angeles Ntl. Forest, Tujunga District Office is given for both:  (818)899-1900.

Campground Directions:
Soledad: From the intersection of I-5 and California 14 northwest of San Fernando, drive north on CA 14 for 10 miles to the exit for Soledad Canyon Road.  Turn east on Soledad Canyon Road and drive about 5 miles.
Live Oaks: From the intersection of I-5 and California 14 northwest of San Fernando, drive north on CA 14 for  3 miles to the exit for Placerita Canyon State Park (Placerita Canyon Road).  Drive East on Placerita Canyon Road for about 5 miles, passing the  state park en route.
