Your First A-meet

A-meets are exciting competitive orienteering events. All clubs try to offer an A- meet at least once every 2 yrs and people come to them from all over the country and even abroad.
The host club needs lots of Volunteers to make an A-meet successful contact the meet director now to do the same day-of-meet things as at any meet - start, finish and registration, plus a few extras - childcare, hospitality; the more help, the better the event.
A-meets are special Nationally sanctioned events with very high standards for maps and courses. This does not mean the course will be harder than you are used to, just that these courses really stick to the IOF/USOF guidelines. Courses are point-to-point, and all colors are offered. Entry is by age/gender. Which class for you? By AGE, OPEN or RECREATIONAL see Classes and Courses details

A-meets attract top competitors from throughout the country. Your results as a USOF member will count for a National Ranking System (if you attend 4 A-meets in the year). You know how you rank against your own club's members, but come find out how you do against a wider field. Beginners may wonder if they should participate. Never Doubt It! There are the usual courses, with classes by AGE/GENDER , and each course has an OPEN (not age restricted) class . So if your age group would be a M35+ RED, or F50+ GREEN and you are not yet competitive at that level, you may choose to compete in ANY OPEN category such as M-Orange, or F-Brown.

Join USOF. Get ranked nationally , save on entry fees! Cost of A-meets is higher than a regular Club Event. Be Aware that there is pre-registration and often LATE FEES. The term EDL means last date to register before LATE FEES apply! Do check the meet web-site for fees and other info. By joining USOF you will not only be helping the sport grow, get the national magazine and get ranked, but also get a considerable discount on entry. which if used with all this year's A-meet opportunities in the west, really helps offset your costs.

If the expense or competition seem too much, but you want to get all the perks - good maps, great courses, meet lots of orienteers from all over the US Canada and even the rest of the world and have fun - enter White, Yellow or Orange in the RECREATIONAL Category. You won't win an award, but the cost will be closer to what you pay at a club event.

B-meets such as Mt Pinos 2-day and the SDO Palm Desert 2-day are very like an A- meet, with all the courses, the same standards, but not necessarily all the same gender/age classes . B-meets do not count towards national ranking., but they sometimes are used for regional ranking. They are always a top club event and do cost less than A-meets.

E-punching is now used at many A-meets. A good description may be found at e-punching

Find more information on the USOF Site, choose Club Resources, then page down to A-meet information
