This event will be a test of route choice and of map reading. To claim all 1000 points it tests stamina. Those who did it last year will find new challenges - and there will be special recognition if you do better this time. It will be FUN. Forget trying to get all those points - enjoy the neighborhood. Do it with a friend! We offer two start times (see times below)

The Elysian Park Street-O encompasses the park and the adjacent historic streets, stairs, and hills of Echo Park. You may pass residents carrying groceries up steep stairways. (see history below)

The course is dog friendly, but they need to be on a leash and you need to pick up after them. Many dogs already in the area. Bring a dog - Bring a bag.

The weather is changeable. It could get warm, especially climbing the hills. Dress for running but dress in layers. There are public drinking fountains scattered throughout Elysian Park. Water can be bought in the stores along Echo Park Ave. We will not provide any for personal use.

    Urban Controls and SCORING
The basic course consists of scattered controls of various point values. You visit any or all , in any sequence. ROUTE CHOICE!
There are no normal O-flags on controls. Instead they are dedication markers on structures, ID numbers on light poles and other identifying characteristics. Each control description will have four possible answers to choose from, only one of which is correct.PLEASE BRING A PENCIL

    - - Scoring is cunning this year, to test your THINKING ABILITY under pressure. There may be a Timed Control, a special bonus for getting at least one control in each of several "Zones" - you have been "in the zone"? All will be fully explained at the start.
    - - There will be _wrong-answer_ penalties. i.e. Negative points for wrong answers.
    - - There will be penalties for being overtime (2 hour).

PRE-REGISTRATION: PLEASE pre-register here and choose your start time. Your small effort helps prepare correct number of maps and helps for quick lines at the sign-in table. ONlY pre-registered are guaranteed a map and the chance to start late.

    Course Setter Notes
Elysian Park - Echo Park Course Setter's and Map Notes by Scott Schmitz

The map is a combination of contour map, Google Street and Google Satellite views. The area that we will be using has some interesting "terrain" features. The start area is halfway up Chavez Ravine with gentle elevation changes along the center of the canyon. The Echo Park neighborhood is divided by four sharp ridges; the southern part of the map is fairly flat with several streets following gentle reentrants into the hills. Elevation change goes from 400 feet to 750 feet. The furthest control from the start is approximately 2.4 km, as the crow flies, but route choice will be important to avoid steep climbs on streets or stairways. Hint - contours - straight roads on map do not mean no climb!

All controls are set on public property or public areas. Except for the stairway easement through the Fellowship Park community, there is no need to enter private property, so please do not. If you choose to traverse Fellowship Park, please respect the peace and quiet of the neighborhood, no running, no noise. Also, please obey all traffic laws. Volunteers on the course will disqualify you if you are observed violating traffic laws.

From Historic Echo Park: Historic Overview

The wooded hillsides make the northern edge of the neighborhood feel like an extension of Elysian Park. Early automakers tested their newest models on Baxter and Fargo streets to prove they could climb some of the city's steepest streets. The remote and rustic atmosphere made these hills popular with those seeking seclusion.

More than two dozen public stairways cross the hillsides of Echo Park, concrete reminders of a neighborhood designed before the automobile came to the dominate the landscape and culture of Los Angeles. Street car lines helped make Echo Park a viable community by connecting it to central Los Angeles and other nearby towns, and many of the stairs were modest links that connected hill dwellers with the streetcars below. But some, including the Laveta Terrace Baxter and Avalon Stairs, are impressive and stylish public landmarks that reward those who climb them with stunning views. In fact, at more than 230 steps, the Baxter Steps are perhaps the tallest in the city.

GETTING THERE - can be a challenge
From north-bound I-5 fwy exit "Stadium Way" actually Riverside Dr. Turn left. After going under the 5, turn left onto Stadium Way proper.

From south-bound I-5 exit Stadium Way and turn left. Follow Stadium Way towards Dodger Stadium. At Academy Rd, turn right, then turn right again into the parking lot.

    VIA ECHO PARK AVE:

  • From northbound US 101 fwy, exit "Glendale", go straight at the signal. This is Echo Park Ave.

  • From southbound US 101, exit "Glendale". Take Union Ave to Temple St, turn left. Take Temple St to Glendale Blvd, turn left. Go under the US 101 bridge to Bellevue Ave, turn right. At Echo Park Ave, turn left.

  • then take Echo Park Ave to MAGIC GAS Y-junction. Veer Right on to Morton Pl. Go .3 mile straight up the road, there is a major widening of the road and a junction to the right - this is ACADEMY RD, the sign was missing last week (10/24). At Academy Rd turn right up the wide road, not the 2 narrow side roads. Go over the hill, at the bottom turn left into the parking lot. Look for O-signs.
