NOW for FUN! meet preview by Darrin Greenstein:--

Come to Belmont Shore in Long Beach (google map) for some cool summer orienteering. Continuing with our theme of different types of orienteering, we will be having a Score-O through the streets of Belmont Shore. Normally LAOC does not hold events during July since we have so few maps that are in summer friendly locations; so we decided to give the Beach a try. In addition, the 2nd Street area has lots of eating and shopping choices for after the event.

SAFETY: Special safety precautions will be taken since this event will be run on city streets with their inherent safety hazards. Adult may run as individuals, all others must run in groups of two to four Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. All traffic laws must be obeyed. Streets must be crossed only at intersections, preferably with marked cross walks. Volunteers will be on the course and anyone observed violating traffic laws will be disqualified.

Volunteers - we need fewer, but still would like some help:-) Beside the balmy beach weather (and lack of poison oak), this format also allows for the use of fewer volunteers, since there will be no e-punch and no control placement or pick-up. This will also allow for an earlier start to avoid conflicts with beachgoers and the possibility of afternoon heat. We will, however, need help with registration, start and finish. If you can lend a hand for an hour or so please contact Darrin (laocnews@charter.net).

GET THERE - La Verne Ave at E.Ocean Blvd, Long Beach google map

by Metro Take your bike on the Metro Blue Line from LA to 1st Street Station in Long Beach. It is a 3 mile bike ride to the start (mostly beach bike path from Alamitos Avenue on the west to the Start lot on the east.

Driving google map zoom out and take your choice of FWYS which go to Long Beach
One choice from Darrin:
From the San Diego Fwy (405) take the 7th St. offramp.
Go west about 1.5 miles and turn left on Park Ave.
Go south for about 0.9 miles and turn right on Livingston Dr.
Go south-west for 0.5 miles and turn left on Termino Ave.
Go one block south to Ocean Blvd and turn left.
Go east 0.6 miles to the parking lot on the beach side at La Verne Ave
(while this is rather circuitous, it avoids some traffic hassles caused by one-way streets)

Parking: The start-finish area will be next to a beach parking lot that is metered, 25¢ for 15 minutes, so bring lots of quarters. Free street parking is limited.
or use Metro and your bike!

Courses Offered: Urban Score-O This Score-O will not have traditional controls. Instead, your clue sheet will have a question about the control location which must be answered to prove you were there. Types of controls include dedication markers on structures, ID numbers on light poles and other identifying characteristics. Each control description will have four possible answers to choose from, only one of which is correct. Each control will have a point value that will be awarded for the correct answer. To discourage guessing, the negative value of the assigned points will be given for an incorrect answer.

Two classes of course will be offered: one and two hour time limits. Point penalties will be assessed for being overtime; you must decide before starting which time category to run.

Thank you and come join us for a fun event!
